Limuru clinch Nairobi foursomes golf title after defeating hosts Muthaiga
By LARRY NGALA
The Limuru A team of national team captain Francis Kimani and Kenya Amateur Match play champion James Karanja beat hosts Muthaiga’s A team of Evans Vitisia and AshwinGidoomal one-up on Sunday to clinch the Nairobi District golf title at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course.
The two teams fought a neck and neck battle right from the first hole, exchanging leadership up to the eighth where Limuru went up and never gave up the lead up to the end. Up to the 15th hole, the new champions were leading by two holes but Muthaiga won the 16th after Vitisia sent his second shot to the water at the 15th.
The two teams halved the 17th with pars and the 18th with birdies for Limuru to claim the title.
Before that Limuru had beaten the other Muthaiga team (B) of Kumar Dhall and Rajesh Bhabra 3-2 in the second semi final while in the first semi final Muthaiga A had beat the hard charging team of Bo Gatundu and Jay Sandhu with a 2-1 victory yesterday.
Limuru’s victory was the first time since 2008 when Kimani teamed up with now professional John Kagiri. “It’s nice to win this tournament and particularly from Muthaiga. We didn’t play that well but were still better than Muthaiga’’ said Kimani who has been in Limuru’s A team for the past 10 years.
Kimnai and Karanja made their way to the last four after eliminating defending champions Vet Lab whose team this time was made up of Robinson Owiti and Mathew Omondi with a 4-3 victory which was Limuru’s highest score, having started the tournament with a 2-up win against Railway’s John Wangai and Anthony Mwaura.
This year’s tournament was sponsored by Kenya Postel Directories and attracted the usual 16 teams from 10 clubs.
